The answer was provided by Fred DeKeyser in round 2 of the contest.

Simply, the original ChipGuide had images that were cropped and resized to 158x158 pels. Then the standard was changed to 240x240 pels. The originals images were smaller and ChipGuide pages with original images looked awkward. The enhancement was to show all images at 240x240 pels, no more small images.
