Here's a color sample set for plaques (and jetons too?) likely made by Caro / Caro & Fils. I acquired it 10-15 years ago, but don't recall any details -- eBay, I think, but not sure. (See pics below.)
This color set, on a chain, consists of 22 samples, each 2 x 2 inches, with the contrasting interior color at 1-1/4 inches square. There are 8 different exterior colors, each with 2 or 3 contrasting interior colors. The 8 colors (and numbering system) are: 4-dark blue; 8-solid red; 10-turq.green; 11-medium green; 14-yellow; 25-purple; 27-light blue; 40-light pink.
Most of the samples are in good shape for their age. Two have some warping, and 3-4 have some shrinkage, where the interior square has pulled away (shrunk) from one side. However, I do notice that "vinegar" smell a bit. Not strong, but it's there. So, I'm planning on storing them so they're not touching each other.
Questions: Can anyone confirm for sure that these are Caro samples? They seem European for sure. Does the numbering system ring any bells? (BTW, the red ones are solid red, but all other colors are MOP-like plastic.) Also, estimated date? Are these from the 50's-60's or more recent? And finally, any suggestions on storage?
