In Response To: Question about "Obsolete" ()

absolute answer as there are always exceptions to the rule. Very close to your Gold Coast example, is that of their sister property, The Orleans.

The Orleans open in 1996. All 11 of their $1 chips, as issued in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 (all of those in an ochre color, with those respective dates and the alligator logo), along with the silver inlaid and hot-stamped versions of 2019 and 2023 issues can all be turned in at the cage, and played on the tables (although they will be placed into drop-box and replaced with the silver chips).

At the same time, all past issued redbirds ($5), $8, $25, $100, $500, secondary issued $1,000 and $5,000 are still negotiable at the cage and on the tables, to include all Limited Edition versions of $5 and $25 chips. NOTED: $8 chips will be swapped out for rack chips.

FWIW, since 1996, there have been 6 different issued rack redbirds in, 1996, 1999, 2005, 2009 and 2011, with several re-orders of the 2011 version. All $25 and $100 rack chips are dated 1996, but there have been several reorders of both over the years. I do not know for certain if any of the $100s (dated 1996), $500s (dated 1996) and $1,000s (dated 1996) have ever been re-ordered.

The poker room uses 3 additional chips as drop chips, a $2 chip dated 2007, a $3 chip dated 2012 (with a 2028 reorder), and an undated $4 chip, released in 2019. (Either the $3 or $4 chip is on hiatus at the present time. I forgot which one, but it can be put back into play at the drop of a hat (or an increase in the rake.)

Lastly, The Orleans used a $1,000 chip in their opening days, for about a month and it was swapped out for a secondary issue. I have never seen an original issue of the $1,000 as a whole chip, and know of 2 notched examples. In addition to a bunch of pieces!
