Question about "Obsolete"

Hi Folks:

I am wondering when it is proper to say that a chip is obsolete rather than current. For example, a $1 chip issued in 1986 is replaced by a different $1 chip in 1992. Is the first one now considered obsolete or is that term not properly applied until the casino closes?

Thanks,
Carl
