Book report: Cuba - Fichas de Casino

(Warning: Extended commentary grin )
About a month ago, I made an eBay purchase of the book "Cuba - Fichas de Casino". I only received it yesterday, but I'm enjoying it so far. (The extended purchase-to-arrival timeframe was noted up-front on the eBay listing, and the seller/author kept me informed. Also, he's in Spain, so that takes a while too.) Cost on eBay is around $60 when you include shipping & tax.

The book is written in Spanish, but includes an English translation pdf which he sent immediately after receipt of the book. In some respects, looking at the pdf is better - besides being in English - as you can magnify it for easier reading and viewing the pics of chips & other stuff. My pdf reader can magnify the text and pictures to around 300% (3X) before pixellating too much.

It's 300 pages in pdf form and slightly less (I think) in book form. About half the pages are pictures & descriptions of chips, using a 7-chip per page grid: numbering system; chip pic; description; color; dimension (chip size/diameter); comments; and grade. Grade is basically 3 options: Common ($1-$100); M - for Medium? ($100-$500) and R-Rare? for $500+.

The book covers gambling in Cuba (history, political, cabarets/hotels/clubs & associations) in narrative form, including pics. Nicely written & informative. The real emphasis is on the chips, with 800 pics included.

As a comparison, the "Havana Before Castro" book (out of print, but available used in the $20-$25 range+) covers a broader look at pre-Castro Cuba, definitely including the clubs & casinos, but much less on the chips used.

Also, as comparison, the Cuba chip listings on ChipGuide number 1176 chips, but there's around 50-75 modern/fantasy/fake listings there too. So roughly, it's 1100 chips on ChipGuide vs 800 chip pics in the new "Cuba" book. I didn't attempt to compare apples-to-apples re: chip coverage.

My only surprise was that I thought the new "Cuba" book would be bigger. It's 6" x 6" x prox. 300 pages -- see my pic of book and a chip, for comparison size.

Personal conclusion: The Cuba and Havana books make good companion purchases, if you're interested in this area of collecting (and/or Cuban history of this era) ... and in combination with ChipGuide, it makes a nice trifecta. grin
