Autopay is an experiment (sellers can opt out, buyers can seek an exception). Basically, as soon as the buyer wins the auction, the money is paid out of his account to the seller. It's taking a lot of buyers by surprise too - because it defeats their attempt to shift money around or to shop the seller's other items to benefit from combined shipping discounts. As you can see, though, the exception for "still shopping" has holes in it.
