Back in the day ... the Atlantic City Chapter of the CCGTCC had meetings 6 times a year on a Sunday at 11am. The CCGTCC had chapters back then and the ACCCC was the largest by far. Casino chip collecting was at its height, the market was crazed with Limited Edition chips. For many couples, centered around Eileen and Bruce Landau, the Sunday meeting became a week-end couples get-away. I think there could have been a dozen or so couples who participated. The weekend started on Friday night and lasted through to the meeting and sometimes after. Dinners and shows, gambling, shopping and walking the boardwalk. Huge social event, 6 times a year. Incredible comradery.
The meetings were like a mini-convention. They guys went to the meeting and the gals went out antiquing. Regularly 125 to 150 collectors would attend. On the way home I'd stop for lunch in Absecon and bring with me the bag holding my purchases of the day and wonder at them until lunch arrived.
Bruce's passing sent a shock wave through the hobby and an arrow threw the heart of the Atlantic City club. It was never the same again, he was such a big part of it. He used to conduct the auctions, there was no one finer than Bruce. He took the time to find out all he needed to know to auction an item and was an amazing seller. Bruce had charisma. He made everyone he met feel like you'd been best friends for years. He had a million dollar smile. Bruce was a role model for every collector, he always did right. I went to his funeral in New Jersey. I was surprised to see so many chippers there, I remember the Haber's flew in from Las Vegas to be there.
The Atlantic City club is still going strong, but it is not what it once was.
