So 6 months ago we decided to take the (grown) kids to Fairbanks AK and look at the northern lights. We walked out of the airport and nearly died - it was -25 degrees with a stiff wind. Barley made it to the rental car before freezing and that was the high of the day. It got down the -37 at night. Four days and it never got above zero.
We get to our condo and realized that we are just in front of a NORAD site!! I am pretty sure that there is a very large something in that huge open area that can go bang and if the Russians had hit us we would have gone bang also. Then we look over the next day and see Bullwinkle and his partner 5 feet off the end of our deck. That was really neat. The bad news was despite standing out in -20 degree weather for 4 nights we never did see any northern lights. After not seeing them in Iceland and Fairbanks I had to tell Cindy that I am done looking for them and that the rest of our trips will be to tropical locations.
