My “barrel” story

Back in the early sixties in Brooklyn I would ride my bike for miles. One day I was riding in what was/is known as Industry city. It was located between the BQE and the water. It was a bunch of industrial type buildings.

As I was riding down one of the streets there was an opening where trucks would pull up to a dock and load/unload whatever they carried. Out of curiosity I parked my bike and walked in to see what was happening. To my surprise I notice a gigantic wine barrel (gigantic to me anyway). It was filled to overflow was unopened packs of Topps baseball cards. I asked a worker if I could have a pack or two. I remember he told me they were the previous years cards. I could take all I wanted. It was in fact “garbage”. Turns out the place was topps manufacturing plant. I’m sure they had thousands and thousands of pack waiting for disposal.

Well I took one pack,, opened it and attached a card to the front and rear wheel. Boy that that sound great!

Today I think of all the Mickey Mantel cards I passed over because they were “last years edition”
