Observations on Louigi’s Broiler $1

Louigi’s Broiler was open on the Strip for 20 years, from 1951 to 1971. It was allegedly a 24 hour hangout for performers, but for some reason, I’ve never seen a picture of this place. Very mysterious. They originally ordered chips in the rectangle mold, but no $1, since they were evidently using silver dollars like most other places in town. In 1964, when silver dollars disappeared due to the rising price of silver, they turned to the Christy-Jones company for a $1 chip, but somehow they goofed. Look at the ‘G’ on Louigi’s. It is overstruck over another letter. Under high magnification, it appears to be an ‘S’. Apparently, the chips were made with the name “Louisi’s”, and C-J solved the problem by striking a ‘G’ over the ‘S’. This overstrike appears on both sides of every $1 chip I’ve ever seen. I recently purchased a collection of old time Vegas chips and it included two of these in excellent condition. $80 each delivered.
