Reminds me of the penny collection book (dark blue with the paper cover and foldout pages with slots labeled for each year and mint mark). My brother and I each had one, with the first (?) slot labeled 1909 S VDB. This was late 1950s or so.
We did pretty well at filling the binders, going through pocket change, but that VDB hole was never filled . Still had fun doing it though. Over time, it became the holy grail of pennies to us.
The other penny that I liked was the anomalous steel pennies from the WWII era. Perhaps that influenced my interest in unusual (and/or rare) chips!
The "completionist" urge in collecting is there too, though I enjoy the hunt without getting caught up (too much) in the need to complete a group. There's some that will always get away, or never even show up!
