A bit of background...
My husband and I have been collecting Nevada casino "stuff" for 30 years, maybe more. We've always collected whatever we liked...be it chips, china, dice, coin cups, cards, keys, etc.
When we started buying dice, I didn't realize that they were so darn finicky! We bought Riker display cases so that we could see and enjoy our dice. As the collection grew, we bought more cases. I had them divided by location...Downtown LV, the Strip, Reno, Tahoe, small town, etc.
Eventually I learned that dice can crystallize, implode, and some even smell like vinegar!! Unlike leopards, dice can even lose their spots! And they don't play well together. If you have dice that are starting to self-destruct, they need to be quarantined or they will affect the dice around them.
I learned that, but I didn't really know what to do with the dice. I left them in the Riker cases, but checked on them a couple of times a year to see if they were doing ok. As soon as I opened a box I knew if any of them smelled like vinegar, and I pulled them out. If I saw them starting to implode or crystallize, I pulled them out. Not the ideal solution, but better than nothing.
Then the Covid quarantine came along. It worked out well for me because it gave me time to scan dozens of binders filled with postcards, chips and paper stuff. But the collectibles got rearranged and the dice were relegated to the basement. Out of sight was out of mind...and I don't think I've checked on the dice since then.
Then Roy Klein asked about spots on dice so I dragged the dice out to look at them. Ugh...!!
I pulled out the worst of them...about 150 dice that are a total disaster.
Knowing that it was wrong to put them in the Riker cases, later dice landed in coin cups or small boxes.
I've almost always known that dice wouldn't survive being stored in foam, I'm guessing that these were already foam-damaged when we got them.
These are what's left in the Riker cases...as you can see, I didn't remove all of the damaged ones.
I finally gave it some serious thought and found 2"x2"x1" boxes on Amazon (Assembly required). I ordered 800 boxes, plus 1"x2" labels. I'm considering using a paper punch to allow a bit of air flow...though it will be minimal.
Fingers are crossed that some dice will be saved...
