"Cross-Hatching" is a herring-bone effect, pressed

into the surface of clay-composition chips. Look closely at the two chips pictured (especialy the one on the left) and you can see the herring-bone pattern across the face of each chip. This is called cross-hatching and the cross-hatching will wear away at the chip's edge first, moving toward the center.

The extent at which the cross-hatching is worn away can help make a determination of chip condition.
