Re: "Stratosphere debuts world record thrill ride"

I did the original skyjump at the SkyTower in Auckland a few years ago when I was backpacking. It was a pretty neat experience because they tell you to step off the platform and you fall a few meters, and they stop you and take a few photos and then drop you the rest of the way. Then once you get close to the platform they slow you down and you land smoothly. Not quite as exciting as a bungy jump, because you know they are in full control of you, but the free fall is longer.

The memorable part was that when I landed they told me they needed to fill some time to appear busy and attract customers so they let me do the jump a second time for free. I was jawing with some people on the lift ride to the observation deck and one guy who was absolutely terrified of heights (he was shaking in the lift) asked me "What happens if you miss the platform?" I looked at him and said "The cleanup is easy, the platform is surrounded by a steel grate." I think everyone thought that was funny except the guy who was scared, and my Mother.
