I have a buddy that ran a message board and they still had spam problems. They tried a couple of different versions of software out there. The spammers would register for accounts so that they could make posts. They best method they had to control it was to manually verify each and everyone person who registered for a new account. So, you're just transferring the work from one type of task to another. They ended up giving up the message board piece of their site because it was taking too much of their time.
Some days we are going to have a problem with spam. No doubt about it. For now, it is something that we all are going to have to live with. I still think my spam killing software is getting a ton of it. Some days, it might not be able to keep up but I think it's doing good for the most part...
