In the US it's a fear of identity theft. Here in Mexico, it's a fear of express kidnappings. Recently here, mailing lists were freely published and you had to register to opt out, leaving your information open to everyone. The situation here now is if you don't OPT IN you cannot publish someone's persoal info. Just my two cent(avo)s worth.
