Yes, they might forgo some income from hotel guests, Gene. But their incremental cost would be essentially zero.

At $10-16 a day, it is a moneymaker for lots of providers to wi-fi for travelers. They have to offset the cost of their tech-support phone people, though. I seem to have to call about half the time I use paid service because something doesn't work right. Because many municipalities and some public areas like airports are offering it free now, I expect eventually there will be free wireless data connections everywhere. The newer wi-max networks (802.16 protocol) such as CLEAR will also become more prominent and although, they may not be totally free, they will allow some of the characteristics of cellular phones, like handoff between sites if you move around.
