I suspect you are using attachments to email to pass around your digital-camera pictures. This really is slow as most mail programs won't handle binary files and have to do a cludgy conversion to what looks like text. This is so inefficient that it takes 6-8 times as long as it would with a method that could just blast the binary bits up the cable.
If you do much of this, consider one of the programs that will move any kind of file from one web location to another. The method is called FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and was one of the first applications of the Internet; moving files from one university computer to another. There are commercial versions, as well as freeware that you can download yourself. You can zap a 100K file in maybe 10-15 seconds with this method. Let me know if you need more info.
