There are two peices of software (possibly more). There is the scanner driver and epson scan, this provides the interface to the scanner, and then there is an image manipulation software. According to the Epson website that is Photoshop Elements. So you should be able to install all the software (and it sounds like you might be having issues) and then go into Photoshop, do a "file, import, ". It should then start the epson scan, and allow you to change the settings on the scanner.
I am not sure if the Photoshop Elements they provide is a 30-day trial, a limited version (which would be fine for chips) or something else.
