Monarch vs. Stackrite mold...
In Response To: wantedMonarch-Stackrite Chips wanted ()

Hi buddy! If I can take your chip group one step further: From the catalog section in Dale's revised edition AGC page 414, Harris called them Monarchs in 1900 and they also used the term "live checks" and marketed the design of the chips as they "are made so they do not touch one another. The contact being on the outer rim, will avoid sticking together. This is what is called a LIVE check." Looking at Harris' "not sticking together" marketing concept in 1910 seems only secondary to the fact that the sunken center would allow an engraved design on a monarch chip to keep it's original quality for over 100 years. In 1909, EVANS marketed them as the "Up to date Check" (Seymour page 427) with a simular marketing concept. These Monarch chips are actually the "Raised Circle" mold also known for the abreviation for the mold RaisCir pronounced Raycer or Racer. The Stackrite chip mold is actually a Hunt & Company mold that had an extra ring on the inside of the typical Raised Circle. The Stackrite mold is Seymour coded PD-TZ named Monarch Circle by Dale. Your Green STAR & CRESCENT chip in the bottom row of your scan is a Stackrite chip with the extra circle Rog. I would love to have one if you have an extra one?
The scan below is from the introduction to Howdy's Guide to Hunt & Company on the Stackrite mold. It is a book well worth the cost for serious collectors of old chips and I am sure Howdy & Kregg will have the book available for purchase at the convention... I got mine autographed at the convention last year. vbg
