At Dan Marino's golf tournament at the beginning of the year, Ivan Lendal & Troy Aikman wouldn't sign unless you stood in a line for 2 hours in the hot sun. Not even for Gene would I stand in line for any autograph. One the 10th tee, I stood with fine tipped Sharpie in hand & got Johnny Bench, who can be a real pill even if he is getting paid, to sign a chip for Gene. I got a number of football players both active & retired as well as other sports stars to sign. At Don Shula's golf tournament a number of years ago, Joe DiMaggio was swamped for autographs by everybody at the 1st tee. I wandered down to the 8th tee & nobody was around. He signed 5 pieces for me, but insisted that he personalize them. I could have cared less. I had him sign a menu from Shula's Steak House. When I asked Shula to sign the menu, he became a raving lunatic! He started to scream about the cost of producing menus, & refused to sign. I had a kid get him to autograph a Sports Illustrated magazine that I brought. You can never tell!
