First I like to watch the show, and even tape some I miss. The show lets the average guy see how much difference there is in buying and selling. They buy for pennies and sell for dollars, the customer pays dearly. I have no idea what profits a pawn shop actually realizes, as I am sure some items sit for long periods of time before selling and others may have to be discounted to move but what the show reveals is that the customer gets ripped.
Pop comes across as a miserly old b*stard, Rick a hustler ready to pick your pocket when you are down and out, and Chumbly looks like the village idiot. You wonder why the people willingly take such a beating selling their items. I guess they are desperately needing cash, and Rick willingly screws them (or so it seems). Makes for good entertainment.
