Sports Radio here in NY held out this nugget: Albert Belle's average year was a .295 BA, 40HRS and 130 RBI's. He drove in 100 runs 9 straight years.
Dawson average season is .279 BA, 27 HR's and 97 RBI's. He drovein 100 runs 4 times.
To me, Dawson was your prototypical stat compiler. A very good player, yes indeed, but a Hall of Famer? Not in my book. For the HOF, I prefer the player who flat out dominates for a shorter span than the good player who sticks around and piles up numbers.
For the record, I hated Roberto Alomar when he was on my team (the NY Mutts ahhh I mean Mets) but Robbie absolutely deserves to be in before Dawson. One of the top second basemen of the era, and a lifetime .300 hitter with 2750 hits.
