Although new technology memory is certainly cheap, the chips for PC's older than 5 years or so is not. Many of the chip manufacturers have stopped making it. I would recommend a new PC. You can easily get 2GBY memory plus Windows 7, huge disk drive, DVD drive, and all the other stuff you need for around $400. Look at the HP HP Pavilion p6210t series, for example.
