Some members perceived slabbing as having a sum negative effect on the hobby. They banded together and formed an effective lobby to stop it.
Punitive measure were institiuted by them to pressure dealers not to slab. It worked.

They are not now going to easily allow the opposition to return and get any foothold in the hobby. Anyone associated with slabbing chips will continue to be marginalized. Those in the hobby who are the accepted "experts" on value have a vested interest in making sure that it stays that way.

Personally, I would never slab a chip I own, but I could care less if someone else did, and I have no problem whatsoever purchasing a slabbed chip. But then again, I am not a newbie and I would never rely on the "opinion" of an "expert" from a grading service. And for the record, the opinion of the accepted "experts" in the hobby can be wrong too. You have to do your own homework.
