As others have said, need to know the game. In our small stakes games (25c, $1 & $3) we need only three color chips so a set of 300 (150 white, & 75 each of red & blue works); but I have sets of 400 with 200, 100 & 100. If the game needs a fourth color (or value--e.g. we sometimes play $1 $5 & $10 with a quarter ante) then I use gold chips and again a set of 400 is enough; 150 ($1) 100 ($5), 75($10) & 75 (25c).
