The Chip Board Archive 19

Archie, what you have posted is a good point!

A long time ago (years ago) Greg approached me (and others) in helping out to control the Troll posts to TheChipBoard, mostly originating from anonymous AOL accounts. At that time he set up a special queue for certain AOL originated posts to await review and approval for posting. In doing so, I was very honored to help out and must have reviewed and approved hundreds, if not thousands of pending posts.

While Greg provided fairly specific guidelines, there were many times that I deferred to him the final OK to let a post go through. These posts often generated discussions between the two of us about what he thought was OK and not OK. (More on that in a moment.) After a while, through a devious and cleaver trap, Greg managed to silence a significant Troll and with a lot of complaints from AOL posters, Greg did away with the queue. (Actually, it still exists and is filled with tons of SPAM.) By having queue review and approval authorization, also gave delete and edit authorization, which was also used by the several people Greg trusted to act in a manner consistent with his policies, or would defer to Greg if questionable.

Greg refined a position based on theChipBoard (and the SlotCardBBS and StrikePoint) was accessible to family members at all ages and that some topics and images were prohibited. Generally speaking, no porn, no graphic violence depictions and no bigotry. However, in the later example, Greg was willing to leave some posts alone, so as to let others see the true nature of the poster. With respect to the political posts, I can't recall his ever saying delete them, modify them or move to try and ban an IP addy. He didn't much care for them (unless they were funy) but he wasn't of the mindset to censor or censure them. As I recall, he figured that any particular thread would just wither away at some point. Just let it run it's course, unless it runs afoul of the other guidelines.

Greg knew that he had ultimate power, and if things went beyond where he thought they should be, he'd send an email requesting/suggesting that the offender take it someplace else. While there may be an extreme example here or there to the contrary, Greg did not publicly redress anyone. (Again, he let their post(s) tell what kind of person they were.)

I liked the way that Greg operated, and I believe that I can continue to follow the guidelines that Greg wanted, even where they are contrary to my personal opinion, to which this thread contains at least one example.

Thanks Archie for posting what Greg did leave it writing.

I miss him so! sad

Jim
