That is a great article Rich...
In Response To: Say again. ()

and I have not read it before. The chips were made in 1924 for sure, they were on William Fisher's yacht at the time and that is also for sure. I am going have to do some research to find the BURGEE name information and were I got it from. The I II III IV designations could also signify yachts previously owned by members the family but I can not tell you that for sure without more research. This Jury Duty thing is still going on and I have to work all weekend to make up for time lost so I hope someone can add the BURGEE information because it looks as if I will be working 16 days straight.

There is an interesting personal sideline to your article that might or might not help. At the end of the second article it say... Among those in attendance at the Jacobs Yard launchings were ... Sloan, WILLIAM RANDS... and that is actually RAND but plural for the Rand brothers or Rand family who I think were better known for the Rand Corporation. The Rand brothers had a yacht called The Four Rs and both the Fisher and Rand families (all brothers) were members of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club that at that time was known as the Little Club. From what I have been told, the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club AKA "Little Club" was called that because it was at that time limited to only 40 Yacht slips, but it was also the club limited to Detroit's Elite social class. At some point the Grosse Point Country Club comes into existance but I am not sure exactly when or if the two became one. I think the chips in this scan are from one of these Grosse Pointe clubs but the records have been lost. I have tried to make contact several times but I never got a response.

MORE: I grew up in a small town about 120 miles North of Detroit called Harbor Beach. We lived about a half a mile from the State Boat Dock and I spent most of my time growing up on or around that beach and dock. The harbor could easily handle freighters but the State Boat Dock could not handle a yacht the size of the Four Rs that was huge and if I remember right was in excess of 100 foot. The Four Rs would fuel at a coal dock that was private and could accomodate freighters, and then it would anchor in front of the Harbor Beach Resort Association about 200 yards off shore. My mother worked at the Resort Association at the time and the Rands had a cottage there. They would make several trips with their yacht each summer. They would give her a list of supplies that they needed on board and my father and I would go to the grocery store to fill the list and deliver them first by car and then to our small 14 foot boat and then, take them (by row boat) to the crew on board. The list of supplies would usually cost about $250 and they would always give us $500 to deliver no matter how much it cost. I can remember in 1965 because I had my first drivers license and my dad was too ill to do this, I made $4800 dollars delivering supplies to the Four Rs and other large yachts that would anchor off shore. They were all from the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club or from the St. Clair Shores Yacht Club. I spent about half the money on a motor for our small boat and I also bought a Harley Davidson '45 Servicar three wheeled stock police issue motorcycle from the Port Huron Police Department for $750.
