Re: Chipology no problems...
In Response To: Re: Chipology problem ()

Hey Belinda,

Actually most PDF files are viewable and printable - as Jim pointed out it is a great way to transfer files between two or more computers that may or may not have the application that created the original file. (Note: PDF stands for Portable Document Format.)

In this case, if one wants to download and save the chipology 101 pdf file, just right click on the "Chipology 101" picture, and then select "save target as.." in Internet Explorer, or "save file as" in Netscape (or something like that as I don't recall at this moment...)

In this case I would recommend that this LARGE file to be downloaded and saved. As I too dislike viewing large on-line documents.

However, the Chipology 101 pdf file was created such that it couldn't be printed nor modified in any way. This was done for several reasons

1) Save intellectual property writes - did anyone notice the copy write notice on the first page?
Belinda and Michael worked hard coming up with the outline, I also commented on it a little bit.
The actaul presentation took us many, many hours to make - searching for "good" examples of chips, scanning them if I didn't have them - or having Michael search/scan acceptable examples if I didn't have them, Editing the raw images, reviewing of the presentation by both Michael and myself multiple times.
Not to mention printing the viewgraphs and hard copy. The veiw graphs took over 7.5 hrs to print, and the hard copy took over 2.5 hrs...
Anyone that has written a book should clearly identity with this effort..
2) The file size is small and wouldn't produce an acceptable (at least in my opinion) print. Recall the original file is in excess of 29 Meg and this file is approx 2.5 Meg - the thing that suffered was image quality. This can be readily seen with the die-cut metal Kentucky Club chip on page 9 - it is hard to see that the chips is a Small Greek Key... In the original file it is VERY evident.
3) Save printer cartridges - this document contains a lot of green!!! - and I didn't want to be yelled at...
4) The color scheme doesn't really lend itself to be printed in grey scale, so again this is to save cartridges...

As Michael and I commented at the seminar, that once we can find an acceptable way of getting the cost of reproduction of the hardcopies to $20 or less, we will let everyone know...

I hope everyone understands and accepts our decision to make the pdf file unprintable.

Regards,

Dick
