I thought about that. I bought a splitter for my cigarette lighter socket. The splitter included a USB socket. I plugged the garmin into the USB socket (I had an radar detector and phone for the other sockets)

I'll first try it without plugging it in since its is fully charged at the moment. I'll also try plugging in the base and not running the cord directly from the unit to the splitter.
