Great Game, Better Series
It was a 2-way shutout going into the bottom of the 7th inning. Lester and Pettitte were both pitching great games. The Red Sox had not scored a run in 31 innings, which hasn't happened in the last 30 or so years. In the bottom of the 7th A-Rod hit a solo home run, which appeared at the time to probably be the winning run, since the pitching was so good. Pettitte was replaced by Phil Coke in the top of the eighth and gave up a single and then a home run. Two to one Boston and the Yankees fans were giving up hope. Lester is replaced in the bottom of the eighth and with two outs, Damon and Teixeira get back to back home runs to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. A few more hits before the inning is over and the Yankees take a 5-2 lead in to the ninth. Mariano Rivera gives up a hit and a walk, but retires Boston for a 5-2 Yankee victory. It was a nail biter from start to finish, a great game and an even better series. In the Yankees/Boston rivalry, this has to be once of the best.
