No there is probably little market other than the chip community. It's just that a seller believes he has something of value and tries to get as much as he can for his property (can you blame him). As far as a private collector bidding against the club, stop and think what an investment the collector must make first. If a set of records sell for $10,000 and the buyer charges $5 for each copy someone requests, it would take 2000 sales just to recoup his investment, not counting the interest lost on the $10,000 over time. I feel that someone who is willing to invest that kind of money is doing it for the love of the hobby and the preservation of history, not for any monetary gain.
