I can look around but I remember the HP project kits and the HP software that came with the tractor feed printers (now we're talking Windows before 95 and 98?) would do posters in panels. It's been so long and I never really did anything serious, plus I have about a dozen different photo software packages, so I'll have to search tomorrow if no one comes up with the definitive answer for you before that.
