WSOP $2500 Omaha Day 1

Wow! 425 participants each paying $2500 making a prize pool of over $1,000,000 with the winner taking $239000. I started with 7500 chips so it was a lot deeper stack than the $1500 event. My goal today was only to make it to day 2 of this 3 day event. Here's how it played out...

Finished Day 1 and just arrived back to my room. It's 3:45 am.... a full 10 3/4 hours after starting the event at 5 pm. A brutal day in which I worked my way up to 11000 chips almost immediately with blinds only 25/50. My table had 4 poker pros who bragged constantly about winning this tournament and that one, who cares...

Unfortunately I kept getting good drawing hands like A235, AA34 and AA45 only to have them beat handily by the river. One example was I drew AcJdQd9c to see a raised flop of 4d10sKh. It was bet to me and I smooth called my monster wrap to see a very nice 9s on the turn to give me an unduplicatable high but bad in that there was now a spade flush draw. I checked to the original preflop raiser and he made it 300. One other caller to me and I raised it to 600 to make a very nice pot. A terrible Js hit the river to take my straight down the toilet and I checked and called the original bettor not believing that he just made a flush that was only 4% likely on the flop. Crap...

We were playing level 7 and I had managed to work my way from 11000 chips down to 2000. Almost every preflop was raised so I had to be very selective on my calling hands, not willing to bust out on the first day was a priority. But luck finally gave me some flops to work with and I drew A255 double suited to see a raised flop of 456 offsuit. I checked it to the raiser who bet 500 chips. I quickly raised him to 1000 and he mucked immediately. The very next hand I drew Ah5h7Q to see a flop 10sJcKs and have it raised twice before it got to me!!! Luckily I just called and managed to get 5 people to see a turn and I was dreading any spade. Luck would have it that it was a 4h but again it was bet and raised to me for 1200 chips and I raised it all in. The two other callers who saw the flop mucked and the original bettor and raised just called. The river came a nightmare Kd to pair the board and both players check. We were all satisfied to see was all made broadway on the flop and no one had a set or even a flush draw but one of the folders said he muck JK which would have scooped. Whew, 3 way split...

I then took some half pots with nut lows and got into the start of the 8th level with 12000 chips, a huge relief from a total of 3 all ins. I then decided I had to tighten the screws a little more so that I didn't bust out with only 60 minutes remaining. I threw away medium holdings 4 times that would have scooped the entire pot but there wasn't a single flop that wasn't raised and possibly putting me to the ropes.

I am satisfied to tell you that I made it to the end of day 2 with 10800 chips having to play the big and little blinds for the very last two hands of the period and folding both to raises. I believe only 190 players survived Day 1 and Day 2 will be a different story as it will be all new players on another table so who knows. We start at 2pm and I will try to update during the breaks....

Talk to you all then.
