I am no expert but, this works for me. My modem is in the basement on the other side of the house. The router is also in the basement but on this side of the house. I've placed it so the wireless signal goes through two floors (about 15 ft) to the pickup on my computer. I got a cable long enough (about 34 ft) between the modem and router. I think you need to get your router closer to your computer anyway you can.
