Yes, the black hats and canes are part of the litho design on the surface. As Greg said, the full size "inserts" in this design go all the way to the edge of the chip and you can see the edges visibly. It appears to me that the inlay is thicker than a normal center inlay on a Paul-son chip. It's unclear how the mold design is impressed through the inlay into the clay unless the inlay is very flexible and deforms from the heat of the mold.
