I would take a layered approach to making sure your computer is OK by using several different products to scan your computer.
- First, make sure your anti-virus definitions are current and run a full scan of your computer using whatever anti-virus package you have installed.
- Second, download, install, update, and run Spybot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html which primarily looks for spyware.
- Finally, I would use Trend Micro HouseCall http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ which is a free, web-based scanner that looks for viruses, spyware, and other malware.
If those three things come back clean then I'd say it points to someone cracking your password. I would go to ALL of your online accounts and change the password. Make sure you change it to a
Strong Password which consists of numbers, letters (both upper and lower case,) and then special characters. Microsoft has a webpage that goes into detail about what you need to do and there is also a link to a password checker that will tell you how strong your password candidate is. The link to the page is:
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/yourself/password/create.mspx
I had my PayPal account cracked about a year ago and was temporarily deprived of $400 while it was investigated and the charges were reversed. I work in the IT industry so I thought I was on top of it; so it can happen to anyone.
Best of luck to you,
Bill
