Please, I am not looking for a long condolence or sympathy thread.
The era of the Nason’s has ended. At least the ones involved in gambling has ended.
Danny Nason passed on to the Big Casino in the sky on April 12. He was my friend for many years.
I lived with him for roughly the last 3 years.
Danny came into gambling in the early 1940’s when his father and uncle gave him points in the Walk A Show in Elmwood Ohio. He worked in and ran several of the Nason’s illegal clubs. He worked some of the N KY illegals including Beverly Hills. In 1959 Sam Nason started seeing the end of the N KY and Southern Ohio illegals. He sent Danny to Las Vegas and a waiting job at the Desert Inn. Danny was a year ahead of the end and made it to LV a year before the so called KY airlift. Dealers, boxmen, and floormen had a mass exodus to LV in 1960, from over 100 N KY illegal operations.
Danny spent 30 years as boxman, floorman, shift manager, and casino manager in LV and Aruba.
Total 50 years in gaming both legal and illegal.
Danny never met a stranger and never let someone else pay for a meal. Danny was a very good golfer and played with all the Vegas old timers in the Rat Pack era. His golf trophies are collecting dust in his den. His gambling stories kept me entertained for many hours. He was interviewed for a new documentary on N KY gambling about 6 weeks ago.
Danny also attended 2 CCGTCC Conventions.
Danny has not been well for several years. He lived for his cat and his own cooking. He fixed 3 full meals the day before he went to the hospital for the last time. Danny will be interred in Cincinnati with his beloved wife who died many years ago.
Danny was not awake his final few days but I think if he could have spoke to me on that last day his final words would have been
“No Roll---------Dice Down----------Game Over.”
Rest easy my friend.
