Guess again, suckers! <VBG> But that's a very good guess. Dwight Clay hit a 15-footer from the baseline at the Convocation Center in South Bend, Indiana (for Notre Dame) to end the undefeated CAREER of Bill Walton, by the score of 71-70. Walton had never lost a game. Notre Dame trailed 70-59 and scored the last 12 points to pull the upset.
The Elvin Hayes Houston-UCLA game was earlier, in the Alcindor era, in 1968. Houston upset them by almost the identical score of 71-69, but against an injured Alcindor. UCLA, at full strength, avenged it 101-69 in the Final Four that year.
I won't clutter the board with this type of stuff, but it's tempting. I won a " co-national championship" of sports trivia sponsored by a Las Vegas radio station some time about 1985. I can't hang on the Las Vegas trivia, but if someone gave a discount at their booth for sports trivia, I'd be hanging around the poor guy. Andy, who was the guy offering discounts for Vegas trivia? I'll give it a shot, but I'm the dog.
