Very good point for scanning objects for the web (chips or otherwise). However if you are scanning items to be printed, I would caution that scans should be of a higher resolution, at least 200 or 300 dpi for items to be printed in 'life size' (relative to the original object). And if you wanted to print bigger (say a 4x6 filled up with an image of a chip), you may want to scan even higher (400 dpi).
You have to understand what the ultimate target is for your scan...
