How many times, when you exit a cab.....

could you even remember what Cab Company you had used....let alone the name of the driver the number of the cab and the drivers license number?
This information could come in handy in a number of instances.
The unfortunate situation you describe is one of those instances although I hope it's a rare one.
On the occasion of the last poker cruise I did, three of us parked at the Palms and took a cab to the airport. The cab line was LOOOOOOOONG at the Palms so we walked across the street to the Gold Coast and hailed a cab. When we got to the airport check-in Pete didn't have his passport.
Whoops.
We didn't have a clue what the cab number was or the name of the driver (although she must have thought we were tourists because she took the tunnel...all while we wondered aloud why we had passed Tropicana on the 15 and discussed how the longer trip would effect her tip --NONE) we did know the cab company name.
The passport never materialized.
Moral of the story, make a mental (or better yet physical) note of the company, cab number, driver name and his license number every time you get in a cab.

On a side note, don't let the driver "give you a deal" by NOT turning on the meter. This happened to us in Victoria BC. The meterless ride from the port cost about double the metered ride back to the port AND if the meter isn't running, all sorts of liability issues come into play. If you are in an accident, you want to be ON the meter.

I guess an NCR disclaimer could have been put in the title, but it just goes to show you that you never know what you might leard on TCB grin
