Take a scanner on Vacation?

If all you are going to do is chips, you'll probably be happy with a scanner. I have a stack of hand-me-down 300 and 600 dpi headed for the recycling center.

My best scanner is an Epson V-200. (replaced by the V-300 $89 at some places) Small, good color, 4800 dpi native resolution. That means it's really capable of doing 4800 dpi optical resolution without interpolating. Older scanners are 300 or 600 dpi. Many good older scanners are 1200 dpi, photo scanners are 2400 dpi or better.

What you are seeing besides resolution, that causes the colors to be different is the Color-Depth. Photo scanners are almost all 48 bit and some are 96 bit color-depth. The under $90 Epson above is 48 bit color depth.

I'll have to run some tests, and create some examples of various dpi using the same scanner.

You can take your camera to a party or on vacation, and the scanner isn't very good for that. vbg
