HI, Stu, as usual, you have a knack for showing great California chips! As I recollect, the Menlo club in SF was shut down in 1948 by Edmund "Pat" Brown, then SF county District Attorney. His reason, "they didn't have a gymnasium". Remember, in San Francisco, card clubs were supposed to be social clubs in which social card games were one of many activities. (Most actually operated as de facto cardrooms, though) When the Menlo club was started, they filed a prospectus for a social club including a gymnasium, etc etc.
