I had dinner with some people in the medical profession tonight and learned an interesting tid-bit. Doctors and researchers were looking for a drug that would dilate the blood vessels in the lungs for people with COPD and other respiratory problems and one was found that worked. The problem was that it dilated all the blood vessels in the body and could cause blood pressure drops that were contra-indicated to many heart patients, or persons suffering from low blood pressure. The drug is used but it is limited to just select patents, men and women. In doing the research a side effect made it a candidate for other uses, uses that it is now know for. The drug? You guessed it. v*i*a*g*r*a! It was never originally intended for the use it was marketed for.
