We had a legendary story at the court where I once worked. The Court was created in 1965 as a result of a new state constitution. One of the first orders of business for the new chief judge was to come up with badges for the judges. He had two designs to consider - a large badge like cops wear, or a small badge that is more like a lapel pin. One of the judges suggested going with the small badge so "it won't hurt so much when the state trooper tells you where to stuff it."
