I had my Paypal account hacked into by someone as well. I was working from home that day and saw an email come in about a charge. I looked in my paypal account and saw the charge. I called Paypal and while I was on the phone I saw 2 more come in that short of time. I googled the company and it was some company in Europe that they were purchasing from. They changed the password and I got my money back pretty quick from my bank, but yes, it was a pain.

I've had a credit card number stolen twice in 2 years. I don't know 100% sure if it was online. In one case the credit card monitoring service company called me and asked if I had just ordered a $0.99 charge from itunes? It was in the middle of a week day and both kids were in school so I knew the answer was no. They said that was a common way these thieves will "check" the card number before starting to use it. If the $0.99 charge goes through, then they start to use the number. So we quickly cancelled the card and I didn't have to file anything to get my money back in this case.
