I'm just sitting here wondering something; why wouldn't people want to support the ? What HASN"T the done for them that they would be so short-sighted? To save a few dollars, why would they want to risk the health and survival of the and hobby overall?
I understand that the is bigger than the convention but without it there would be a lot of disappointed people come mid-summer. This is a hobby and with that goes hand in spending money that, in general, is discretionary. If you have the money to spend on trading chips during the year via the mail or purchasing chips on of whereever, think twice and support the and hobby, if saving a few bucks is that important.
Look at it this way, if everyone elects to save a few bucks and not book via the negotiated room rate then there'd be more chips to trade or purchase now but their short-sighted behavior may have just cost the its marquee event. Or maybe it's a ploy to make all the convention chips true collectors items since it would probably be the last convention. However, if you look to save that money elsewhere during the year and support the you keep the hobby and going.
Remember the movie line, "Pay it forward" well stop the whining and "pay it forward" by booking thru the negotiated rate and keep this hobby healthy. I, for one, am as cheap as they come but I understand that me saving a few dollars per night on a room may cost the greater group more in the long-run so if I make it this year, I'll make sure that I book my reservations so that the gets its credit.
Enough said but stop the whining about the room rates!!

Steve
