As I understand it, the California state constitution allowed 5 card draw poker only. I have seen articles in the 1940s about legal
emeryville card clubs being busted for dealing 7 card stud or any other stud game. The mid 1950s aargued endlessly over allowing stud poker (finally legalized) and the 1980s argued endlesly (finally allowed) over the pai gow poker.
