I just reconnected with iTunes and it said that my software was up to date and it would check again on 2/12. For grins and giggles, I did a manual check for an update. A-ha! An update to the carrier settings for my iPhone was available. That might have something to do with my having removed my SIM card because I'm having random "No SIM Card Installed" errors. I really doubt it would have any impact on this current problem. (Okay, so I have 2 issues going on.)
So... I did the upgrade and for good measure, I even reset my network settings. Still no help. Jeff's trick seems to work, but that's not a solution I want to live with for very long.
More troubleshooting time!
