By 1992 things had gotten so bad that Fred Trump actually tried to buy and hoard three million dollars of chips from one of his son’s casinos. (Sadly, the act of charity was eventually foiled by a phalanx of party-pooping lawyers and IRS agents.) Then there was the devastating blow of losing his membership in Forbes’s billionaires’ club.
